‌ Professor Jonkin’s Cannibal Plant

Howard R. Garis

Howard R. Garis is best remembered as a children’s author for his series revolving around the rabbit character “Uncle Wiggily”. Despite his aptitude for children’s literature, his short story “Professor Jonkin’s Cannibal Plant”, first published in the literary magazine The Argosy, is far from fluffy. In Garis’s tale Professor Jonkin is an accomplished scientist who has succeeded in cultivating a tree which produces many kinds of fruit. He becomes dissatisfied with leaving his research there and decides to learn from and experiment on a pitcher plant. Professor Jonkin makes particular reference to Charles Darwin when speaking of his beloved plant, which highlights Darwin’s profound influence in the botanical field but also the author’s imagination, as the plant evolves. This story is the first in the collection to introduce the pitcher plant into the man-eating plant canon. By nature the pitcher plant represents not only a trap, but a visceral abyss with the accompanying fear of being devoured alive.
